Remembering the "shocking" cover some years ago of a naked Demi Moore on the front cover of Vanity Fair, it is as if the display of motherhood is denied the doll too.

But there is also a sense we are facing a different future. Cloning, designer babies, nanotechnology, robotics. "immaculate conception" symbolizes that brave new world. The more life like dolls become, the more they appear cloned. Their perfection mirror the aspirations of the perfect baby. Its as if their parts are interchangeable, a hybrid both human and robotic. Here, she is pregnant as if like how Barbie is presented, no man could be physically involved, no nipples to feed her cloned offspring.
