Though Barbie is promoted and her reputation vigorously protected throughout the world as a healthy and squeaky clean American icon, she is in fact a much revered icon of the Gay community in the US. The successful development of the American Fashion Doll business has been achieved by a predominantly Gay creative dynamic there, who either have nostalgically idealized her form or look to her ability to carry pretty clothes. Stripped of these devices it is as if a new representation of woman has been secretly evolving.
