"The doll paintings began with the development of a 3D computer-generated mannequin at the Royal College of Art. For their unusual 3D form, I made use of the illustration style of
Anne Zielinski-Old's work, who had been working in conjunction with Adel Rootstein. This 3D mannequin – from a final piece called 'Catwalk' – was then in turn used as the prototype, with particular attention to the limbs and attitude struck, for Anne Zielinski-Old's later sculptural development of the 'Fashion Model Barbie' at Mattel. In turn this doll has then been recycled back as the subject of these paintings."
The Soviet occupation of the Baltic Republics and their annexation was an atrocity. The current US and Allied occupation in the Middle East and Central Asia is a brutal reminder. In Estonia, I have painted and drawn the children of Russians who have settled here. Paradoxically, their diverse culture, religion, and beauty has served from my perspective as an alien, to enrich the region. I know no such legacy will be attributed the US and her Allies in the wake of their removal.
