The Cloning of Baabiedolly I & II© MMI

In 1998 I invented the 3D digital head and expression of the lead character Barbie, for the "Barbie Detective" series of interactive software for girls. This was carried out at about the time bio-tech was taking off in California; and Dolly the Sheep had been cloned the previous year. The experiences I had on the inside of the world's largest toymaker gave me the idea for this character "BaabieDolly", a character transgenically modified and cloned.

The original figure Mattel had established for a 3D Barbie Detective was the one on the left, amongst the packaging of the final product. It was about as far as they could go with it.

Invited to sort this problem out, known for my previous 3D modelling on fashion figures, I wanted Barbie in this interactive toy to be more like Gillian Anderson of 'X-Files'and set about directing it on Maya to the figure above. Right down to the slightly raised eyebrow.

This face was later transgenically a feature of Baabiedolly and cloned.
